Elan to see booming shipments of touch-panel solutions
<P>Taiwan-based IC design house Elan Microelectronics is expected to enjoy booming shipments of touch-panel modules and controller ICs in 2008, according to industry sources in Taiwan.</P>

<P>Elantech Devices, Elan's subsidiary, has adopted Elan's touch-panel controller ICs for its touch-panel modules for use in handsets and notebook PCs and has received many orders from vendors of white-box handsets in China, the sources indicated. Elantech's shipments of handset touch-panel modules started in November 2007 and will significantly increase beginning in March, the sources noted.</P>

<P>In addition, Elan has used its touch-panel controller ICs to assemble touch-pad modules for use in notebooks, MP3 players and other portable consumer electronics, the sources said. Lenovo has increased its orders with Elan for notebook PC touch-pad modules and Elan is negotiating orders with Taiwan-based vendors of notebooks, including Acer, Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International and BenQ, the sources indicated.</P>

<P>Elan's shipments of touch-panel solution products, controller ICs and/or modules, will start to rise this quarter due to growing demand from vendors of white-box handsets and makers of MP3 players in China. The company's monthly shipment volume will further increase due to additional demand from vendors/makers of notebooks, MP4 players and other types of portable consumer electronics beginning in the second quarter and from international handset vendors beginning in the third or fourth quarter of this year, the sources pointed out.</P>
